Fry's Ladies XI v Wellsway School 1st XI

Wellsway's 1st XI challenged Fry's Ladies to a match to mark the end of the 2006/07 season and the increasingly close co-operation between the school and the club.  Wellsway's team had had enjoyed possibly their most successful season on record, but even so Fry's team would be a tough challenge.

As the "away" team, Fry's played in yellow.

Early on, Wellsway enjoyed the balance of play, both in possession and territory.  Only Fry's defence kept Wellsway from taking the lead on various occasions.  When Fry's did attack, Wellsway's defence held firm with Amanda King (centre back and also a Fry's player) launching into ferocious tackles and tidying up when necessary.

At the other end, one fearsome reverse stick from Wellsway's Kirsty Gay clattered into the helmet of Fry's goalkeeper - causing the keeper and umpire to stop and examine the helmet for damage!

At half-time, Wellsway were 1-0 up thanks to a goal from Kirsty Gay.  After the break though, Fry's came out all guns blazing.  Wellsway's players were perhaps slow to react and before they did, Fry's had scored twice.

Gradually though Wellsway came back. In a finish that the game deserved and with only minutes left, a fine running one-two just outside the D with Alice Oswald saw Kirsty Gay score her second goal, bringing the scores level.  A draw was a probably fitting result for an excellent game of hockey.

Thanks to James Clifford and Paul Gregory for umpiring the game.
